Invitation: High-level COP28 side event
Mozambique: Destination of Excellence for Investments in Clean Energy and Green Industrialization
The Government of Mozambique with support from Enabel and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change organises a high-level energy transition event.
About
At COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Mozambique in partnership with the Tony Blair Institute and Enabel hosted a high-level side event on energy transition, which aimed at positioning Mozambique as a key energy transition player in the Southern African region.
As an immediate follow up to this successful event, the Government of Mozambique elaborated an ambitious and actionable Energy Transition Strategy and Roadmap to map out a long-term vision for Mozambique to take optimal advantage of the opportunities offered by the global energy transition, while navigating potential risks that the net zero transition can pose to the country’s development ambitions.
This year’s side event at COP28 will be the opportunity to present Mozambique’s Energy Transition Strategy and Roadmap and dive into its four pillars: 1) Modern energy system based on renewable energy sources ; 2) Universal access to modern energy ; 3) Green Industrialization and 4) Adoption of clean energy for transport.

Background
Mozambique is still at the beginning of a journey to build a modern energy system that can support its development and industrialization ambitions. Energy production and consumption levels in Mozambique have been historically low and the majority of energy consumption is related to the primary consumption of firewood and charcoal for cooking. Despite significant progress, only 51% of the population has access to electricity, with significant regional disparities.
The country has, however, unrivalled energy resources with unique natural gas and renewable energy potential. Hydro power, particularly on the Zambeze River, is one of the resources with the highest economic potential for national and regional development with other important opportunities including solar power and wind.
When strategically tapped into, these unique energy resources can provide the engine for driving the country development agenda, generate inclusive socioeconomic growth, and position Mozambique as a prominent protagonist in the regional and global energy transition processes.
